RUSSIANS NAME GEM FOR SAMANTHA SMITH

A diamond found in a small settlement in Siberia has been named after Samantha Smith, the 13-year-old unofficial peace envoy who was killed in a plane crash in Maine on Aug. 25, the official news agency Tass said today.

The Agency reported from Yakutsk in eastern Siberia that the diamond was of rare beauty and would be sent to the Kremlin's diamond treasury. 

Samantha visited the Soviet Union in July 1983 as the guest of Yuri V. Andropov, the late Soviet leader.

The diamond was discovered on August 28, 1985.

Weight in carats 32.70.
